ABC Confirms Carrie Underwood's Return on American Idol, Dismissing Rumors

ABC has officially renewed American Idol for Season 24, marking the long-running singing competition’s ninth season since its revival on the network. While the announcement has excited fans of the show, it arrives amid growing speculation that judge Carrie Underwood may not be returning for another season.

The network shared the news in a celebratory Instagram post that read, “Dim the lights… here we go. #AmericanIdol is coming back for another season!”—a nod to host Ryan Seacrest’s iconic catchphrase uttered before elimination results are revealed. The post also confirmed that online auditions are now open, continuing the show’s tradition of seeking out vocal talent from across the country.

Carrie Underwood, who joined the judging panel this season in place of longtime judge Katy Perry, has faced a mix of reactions from viewers. Some fans appreciated the country superstar’s fresh perspective, while others criticized the judges—Carrie, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan—for offering what they felt was overly positive and non-critical feedback throughout the season.

Behind the scenes, it’s been reported that Carrie has expressed discomfort with some aspects of the judging process, particularly the eliminations. Sources close to production say she has struggled with the idea of being perceived as “mean” and doesn’t enjoy having to critique contestants harshly—leading many to believe she may opt out of returning in Season 24.

Still, fans flooded the comments section of ABC’s announcement post with pleas for Carrie, Luke, and Lionel to return, signaling that many have embraced this season’s panel despite the criticism.

Season 23 of American Idol has offered its usual blend of emotional storytelling and powerhouse performances, including standout finalists like Jamal Roberts, Breanna Nix, and John Foster—each carving out unique musical journeys. While the show may not produce mega-stars like Carrie herself or Kelly Clarkson in its current format, it continues to serve as a family-friendly showcase of talent and inspiration.

As the competition heads toward its highly anticipated finale, the focus remains on the contestants’ stories and vocal growth—reminding fans that the heart of American Idol has always been about discovering new voices and celebrating dreams.

Whether Carrie Underwood returns or not, the show’s renewal is a clear sign that American Idol remains a beloved piece of television, capable of evolving with the times while holding onto its core appeal. And as one generation of idols makes way for the next, one thing is certain: American Idol isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  1. I personally don't believe Carrie was criticizing Jamal, I believe she was just pointing out one of Jamal's strengths and encouraging him to use it! She's been a breath of fresh air and so glad she dresses like a lady instead of a stripper!

  2. I am 67 and I don’t think she is right for Idol. She seems to sit like a box and stern looking. Out of the three, Lionel is best. And I have watched many seasons. Katy was great. You need a more relaxed person and someone that is comfortable in her clothes. Carrie picks with her clothes too much. She is not human to me. Chill

  4. Everyone watching Idol has a favorite contestant and we take the judge's comments in different ways. I watched every night and somehow I missed what she might have said that got so many of Jamal's fans upset. I will have to watch it if it's on tape. I was pulling for Brianna, she has done the most improved category. The little housewife has come out of her shell and will get a contract to make music win or lose, so will John and Jamal. What did Carry say that they didn't like?

  8. I'm 77 and have watched every episode of American Idol this year a for the first time because of so much talent and 3 experienced and caring judges including Carrie and hope she continues to help the upcoming stars . In the first weeks of Additions I had 5 contestants I really liked, #1 John #2 Slater #3 Josh #4 Jamell and #5 Thunderstorm and as the competition continued also Brianna. I think all 6 are great in there own style of entertainment and will get record deals if persued but the best all around entertainer and i.think next Super Star is John Foster

  9. I think Carrie has added a touch of class And a constructive criticism that the contestants should take seriously because she's been in there shoes and knows what it's like. Remember, she had Simon critiquing her. By all this criticism of Carrie, Jamal wouldn't have been able to survive Simon

  13. My personal opinion is that this has been the best IDOL in a long time. Personal I am tired of people putting her down even some of the Cointry music singers have did her ugly. Easter night was such a great night on idol. Every body has their picks and I voted for JOHN MYSELF. Nothing personal I just love real country music. So to me Carry is a classy lady and she gave them constructive criticism. The best CMA AWARDS SHOWS WERE WHEN CARRIE AND BRAD WERE MC ING IT . DONT CALL HER A SORE LOSER SHE WORKED HARD FOR HER AWARDS AND SHE DESERVED WHAT SHE GOT AND THEY REceived their AWARDS FROM THE CMA PEOPLE AND THEY WERE JUST TIRED OF HER WINNING SO SHE GOT SHAFFED MY YOU ALL.Jealous is a real thing and she has talent lots and lots of it.She sets examples for her piers. So you go Carrie your opinion matters
