Nicholas Brendon, Xander Harris From Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dies In His Sleep At 54

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are mourning the loss of Nicholas Brendon, who passed away Friday at the age of 54. Best known for his portrayal of Xander Harris, the lovable and awkward sidekick across all seven seasons of the cult-favorite series, Brendon also made notable appearances in Criminal Minds and the film Psycho Beach Party.

Brendon’s family shared the news with The Hollywood Reporter, describing him as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create." They added, “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans… While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing." The family requested privacy as they grieve and celebrate Brendon’s life.

Brendon had publicly spoken about his health challenges. In 2023, he revealed that he had suffered a heart attack and lived with a congenital heart defect. He also battled cauda equina syndrome, which led to multiple spinal surgeries.

Though Xander Harris remains his most iconic role, Brendon appeared in a variety of projects until 2021. He starred in genre films such as Demon Island and Unholy, and in 2000, he appeared alongside Lauren Ambrose and Amy Adams in the cult-favorite Psycho Beach Party, an adaptation of Charles Busch’s off-Broadway parody of 1960s beach movies.

On television, Brendon had recurring roles on Criminal Minds and appeared in Fox’s Kitchen Confidential, a sitcom based on Anthony Bourdain’s memoir, co-starring Bradley Cooper.

Born Nicholas Brendon Schultz in Los Angeles in 1971, he initially aspired to be a professional baseball player before turning to acting to manage a stutter. During Buffy’s peak, he became an advocate for the Stuttering Foundation of America, helping reshape the portrayal of “nerd" characters in American pop culture. Reflecting on Xander’s impact in a 2017 interview, Brendon said, “It’s just a bunch of dudes who say, ‘Man, you got me laid a lot in high school. You made it cool to be a nerd and awkward and funny.’ I wonder how many babies are out there because Xander got people laid."

Brendon’s life was also marked by public struggles with mental health and substance abuse, including arrests and legal challenges beginning in 2010. He addressed these struggles openly, appearing on Dr. Phil to discuss his issues with alcohol and mental health.

He is survived by his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who appeared alongside him in two episodes of Buffy, including “The Replacement," in which their dual roles explored the character’s contrasting traits.

In addition to acting, Brendon’s recent years were devoted to painting, a passion his family highlighted in a social media post following his death, sharing images of his artwork and cherished memories.

Brendon’s family concluded their statement: “Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support."

May his soul rest in peace!
