Bryant Thomas Cut From ‘American Idol’ After Soaring Fleetwood Mac Cover That Brought His Dad To Tears and...

Call it an upset, but Bryant Thomas, who had seemed like a front-runner during Season 24 of American Idol, leading up to the latest edition of the reality TV sing-off show, didn’t make the cut on Monday, March 9, when he stepped in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, as part of the evening’s “Ohana Round.”

This round, which saw the Top 30 whittled down to the Top 20, was intense, and Thomas was one of 10 contestants who didn’t move forward.

Even with the disappointment, Thomas acknowledged the incredible talent in this season’s group of singers.

“I’m worried. There are a lot of talented people in this group,” said the 26-year-old ‘Secret Shower Singer,’ who had already grown thousands of fans on social media before stepping onto the Idol stage.

Despite struggling to find the confidence that might have propelled him forward, Thomas gave the judges his all. Dressed in an American flag muscle shirt and jeans, the fan favorite launched into a powerful rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” as his soon-to-be wife, step daugher and dad watched on from the star-studded audience.

“This song is kind of about change,” Thomas explained, offering a glimpse into his personal life. “I just recently moved to South Florida in pursuit of love. I hardly see anyone now [and] I kind of lost my family. It’s just one of those seasons of life.”

The Mobile, Alabama native had proposed to his partner, Alyona Palhof, during his Idol audition, and the emotion of that journey was evident on stage. With his father seated in the audience, the performance became deeply personal. Thomas’s gritty, gravelly vocals gave the classic song a raw, new energy. He brought his dad to tears as he poured his heart into every line, infusing the lyrics with the kind of passion and vulnerability that can only come from lived experience. Yet, despite the intensity of his performance, it wasn’t enough to advance him to the next round.

Luke Bryan offered constructive feedback, saying, “Bryant, well, before you sing, I know talking to your family and telling them how much you love them is emotional, but we still have to remember I got a song to deliver, and I have to make sure I’m knocking this thing out, start to finish.”

“Now, you’re one of my favorite voices, but it got a little screamy, a little over raspy. So just curb down some of that gravelly stuff,” he added.

Thomas responded humbly, saying, “I was trying my hardest to get through this song, and that just wasn’t what the judges were looking for this round.”

e wasn’t the only talented singer whose journey ended on Monday night. Others who were eliminated from the competition included Chloe Lauren, Sheldon Riley, Michael Garner, Bella Emry, Brenna Brigman, Kiera Howell, Brianna Yancey, Jacquie Lee, and Tianna.

Looking ahead, the remaining Idol hopefuls will continue to sing for America’s votes over the next two weeks at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa, with guidance from superstar mentors Brad Paisley and KeKe Palmer. Each performance will be another opportunity to impress the judges, win over audiences, and earn a coveted spot in the competition’s next stage.

American Idol airs every Monday night at 8/7c on ABC and is available to stream the next day on Hulu. To keep up with Bryant Thomas, follow him on Instagram.
