Cracker Barrel Changes Logo After 48 Years and...

Cracker Barrel Unveils First Major Logo Change in Nearly 50 Years

From a single roadside stop in Tennessee to a nationwide chain, Cracker Barrel has always been rooted in Southern tradition. But after almost half a century with the same familiar emblem, the company is stepping into a new era.

A Humble Beginning in 1969

The first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store opened its doors in 1969 in Lebanon, Tennessee. Founder Dan Evins wanted to create a place where travelers could slow down, enjoy a warm meal, and feel at home.

The original branding reflected that vision—hand-drawn menus, a rustic logo, and a welcoming country-store atmosphere. By 1977, the company had grown to 13 locations, and with that expansion came a new logo.

Enter Uncle Herschel

That 1977 logo introduced a figure who would soon become inseparable from the Cracker Barrel identity: Uncle Herschel. Inspired by Evins’ real-life uncle, Herschel embodied the brand’s Southern hospitality.

According to Cracker Barrel, Herschel spent his life visiting old country stores, sharing stories, and connecting with locals. After retiring, he became a symbol of sincerity and kindness within the company. Staff even referred to him as the “soul” of Cracker Barrel. Today, a statue of Uncle Herschel still stands at the original Lebanon location.

Nearly Five Decades of Tradition

For 48 years, Uncle Herschel’s presence anchored the Cracker Barrel logo, even as small tweaks brightened the yellow and refined the design. His familiar image became a comfort to regular guests, reinforcing the company’s reputation as a place where tradition mattered.

A Bold Step in 2025

This year, for the first time since 1977, Cracker Barrel unveiled a completely redesigned logo. The update simplifies the look, leaning into a cleaner, modernized font while retaining the signature yellow and brown color scheme.

The company explained that the refreshed branding “is now rooted even more closely to the iconic barrel shape and word mark that started it all.” Alongside the reveal, Cracker Barrel posted:
“You’ve been the best part of our table for 55 years, let’s do some more.”

Mixed Feelings from Fans

Not everyone is ready to say goodbye to Uncle Herschel. One fan wrote on social media, “Why did you get rid of Uncle Herschel? Is nothing sacred?” Others applauded the company for moving forward while keeping the heart of the design intact.

To celebrate the change, country star Jordan Davis even partnered with the brand, recording a music video tied to the new look.

What’s Next for Cracker Barrel

The updated logo is part of a broader refresh that includes renovations and upgrades to locations nationwide—something the company has been hinting at for more than a year.

While some longtime fans may need time to adjust, one thing is certain: Cracker Barrel remains committed to honoring its heritage while embracing the future.

  2. This is not just a logo change (bad as that is), everything unique about the restaurant is changing. A company that changes its core identity, loses their base.
